A rollercoaster ride of temperatures this last week with highs starting off in the 70's before dropping into the 60's for a couple of days and then back up into the 70's. The high of the week was 77° on Monday. Lows ranged from a low of 33° on Thursday to 52° on Tuesday. It was windy the first part of the week, with a couple of calmer days mid week, and then winds picking back up to end the week. There's been a few fire weather warnings in the past month and one last week. No precipitation fell last week. The surrounding areas still look green and the trees in the yard and neighborhood are filling out nicely with leaves. The lilac is in full bloom and the clematis has started to bloom. Saw a rabbit in the yard and scrub jays, robins, and hummingbirds. Also, saw a frog jump in the pond.  View

Conditions are near normal for this time of year. We had 1.07” of rain this week and 3.57” in the past two weeks. Soil moisture is as expected as are water levels in streams, ponds, and rivers. Plant and crop growth is excellent with the soil moisture and moderate temperatures. Many local farmers are bailing hay in between rain showers and pastures are producing lots of grazing forage for livestock. There is no wildfire danger.  View

About a quarter inch of rain over two days early in the week. Just enough to wash off the dust and pollen, but not to stop the gradual browning of the fields. Then the strong, gusty north wind returned and is still blowing. This wind makes ocean conditions too rough for water sports or much commercial fishing. This has not deterred the tourists and the area has filled up for the weekend. Lots of birds and other wildlife in our gardens. Waiting to see the fox and raccoon babies show up.  View

2.02” precip for month, 127% of normal. However, we have also had some very warm days and some wind. We’re very close to normal for the calendar year and water year for this date (101% 102% of average). Trees, natives plants coming along nicely. I see people starting to water their lawns, but I think that has to do with temperatures. Flow is good in creeks and springs in the foothills. Weeding in my yard, the soil is moist but not wet. On balance, I’d say we’re at near normal, despite being a bit over precip for the date. The higher than average temperatures, the wind, and the high runoff (over 1” of the total came on one day) means we’re right around normal for this tome of year.  View

We’ve been getting more than usual rain over the last couple of weeks, which has been beneficial in re-charging groundwater and surface water reserves. General: We are pretty close to normal precipitation. We expect to have 20.26" of liquid/melt by now and we are at 18.82", with nearly half of the month to go. Agriculture: Our neighbors have nearly completed planting (maybe have completed...we heard them last night on the field above us), and are reaping the benefits of the current rain. Energy: We are creating well more than we use now: Yesterday, a partly cloudy day, we produced 53.32 kWHR and used 34.32 kWHR. Fire: Risk continues to increase, though rain helps. Plants/wildlife: We saw an eagle yesterday, as well as a goldfinch. We have seen deer in our area, and saw elk tracks. Water: Water is hopeful. We're pretty much at normal precipitation for my 4-year measurements.  View

Going to stick in with the Moderately Dry for just when we feel things are getting better they are not so good. We are on a 10 day period of no rain now and it is sure drying up fast. Fields are dry and dusty and recent winds caused some dust storms to the east of our area. Unseasonably warm temperatures for a couple days were a sign of July like weather. This coming weeks forecast looks to be promising for some much needed rain. Cross our fingers that it all comes together.  View

Still dry around here with only a 0.04" of rain measured for the week. Sitting at 22% of NOAA normal for the month, with YTD at 65% and Water YTD at 70%. Most planting appears to be completed. Corn and beans both emerging from early planted fields but the soil conditions are dry. Expecting some soaking rains this week which will hopefully help those that are waiting on germination. Mississippi River in Rock Island has dropped three feet since this time last week, with the Green and Rock Rivers holding steady. Hummingbirds have been very active at the feeders.  View

Drought Monitor shows my station in Abnormally Dry area with Moderate Drought a few miles northwest, and with only 0.09 inches of rain this week and the last good rain was 0.84 inches on 5/1, I will set the bar at Moderately Dry. I don't have crops riding on this, but I spent 15 hours moving the garden hose from shrub to perennial this past week. My station is minus 5.91 inches for the Water YTD. Lake and McHenry County Scanner online listed this headline on 5/16/25: "Firefighters in McHenry County kept busy responding to storm-related calls during tornado watch." High winds, dry conditions, tornado watch - we had it going on. AND a tree fell over our dog run late 5/16/25, displeasing Roxie when she went outside later. Will be scheduling a tree service to cut it away. $  View

5/18/25: Turf gives slightly under foot but no longer gives up water when compressed. Drain tiles 12 to 18 inches deep are flowing at just a slight trickle. Low areas are no longer damp or retaining puddles. Sink holes and ponds are at about 90% capacity and falling. A few farmers in the area have just gotten back into fields in the past two days.  View
5/18/2025  IL-TZ-26 ILTazewell Moderately Dry For the week I received only 0.18" of rain. The month of May total rainfall is just 0.99" which is not very good for May! I planted the garden plants this week and have had to water them twice already. The grass is green but has slowed down growing. The pond is full but no longer overflowing. Our local creek is flowing, but below normal for May too. The cottonwood trees are dropping cotton like crazy. Our farmer friends have most fields planted and some up, but waiting for rain.  View
5/18/2025  IL-WF-14 ILWoodford Mildly Dry Missed the storms this week except for a few hundredths so while we continue to be green there is little growth in the lawn and pasture. Took the oxen off the pasture and will be feeding hay for a couple weeks with the hope the pasture will recover a bit. Corn and beans both growing well at this point. Creeks are up a bit although the river continues to be low for this time of year. So now we hope this week's projected storms will reach us.  View

We are experiencing normal to slightly above normal precipitation in this area at present. Fields are soggy but not flooded, with no impact or very little impact to daily activities for most people in the area. We are all hoping for better May weather, but local reservoirs, streams, rivers, ponds and lakes, etc., are full and the ground water table is re-charging. I have heard no complaints about wells going dry. Fire danger is thankfully very low. Everything is blooming and very green and lush at present. Could be worse!  View
